The painful and sometimes farcical life of a defiant young poet, Sally Banner, as she attempts to extract meaning from her environment. The play traces Sally's life from school days before WW2, through lovers, attempted suicide, marriage and politics to disillusion, and at the end of her life, the artist's ever -present sense of failure, ironically coupled with her worldly success.
"Hewitt's play is both symbolic and ritualistic at times. The suggested doubling of actors'roles is not an economy measure or a theatrical device but is integral to the conception of the play" (Neeme, 1972)
Music by Frank Arndt.
