Christopher Ross-Smith has been a director, actor and drama lecturer for many years. In 1974 he was appointed as the first deputy director of NIDA. In 1977 he became foundation head of the present Theatre Studies Department at UNE, and continued there until 1996.
He helped establish the new Cultural Centre in Armidale, and was its first coordinator. He founded the Armidillos Theatre Company in 1985.
