Secondary English teacher, school Principal, grassroots activist, co-writer of A Hole In The Ground, she is now Joanne Ryan MP, proud federal Member for Lalor.
Born and raised in Werribee in Melbourne’s west Joanne spent decades as an educator in western suburban schools. She was Chair of Werribee Residents Against Toxic Dump (WRATD) in their landmark fight against Premier Jeff Kennett and CSR. After the incredible two year campaign and the against all odds victory she joined WRATD friend, Janet Brown to collaborate on a play to tell the story and share the deep learning about activism, politics and team work. New collaborations with MTC and producers, directors and incredibly generous artists followed.
Joanne left her role as Principal at Moonee Ponds Primary School in 2013 to seek preselection for the seat of Lalor vacated by and with the support of Julia Gillard.
She now serves the community she has served in so many ways throughout her life.
