In Australia's bicentennial year Constable Maria Giotto has been voluntarily transferred from the city to a small outback town with a large Aboriginal population. She meets Paddy, his son paul and wife Tricia. Conflict exists between Senior Constable Joe Smith, Paul and the Mission community. It is a conflict that results in the death in custody of Paul. Maria is caught in the dilemma of being truthful, loyal to friends and fellow police officers and the requirements of the police bureaucracy. Sergeant Alec Ross, close to retirement, is an old friend of Paddy. he is torn between friendship, a sense of justice, the demands of superiors and self interest. Within the settings of police station, Mission, hotel and the bush, the tragedy unfolds revealing personal and cultural conflict and their impact upon people under duress.
