The Daly River Girl was written and performed by Tessa Rose, directed by Alex Galeazzi and it was presented by Brown’s Mart in late 2017. It is Tessa’s story about growing up with various non-indigenous foster families in Perth, an eternity away from her mother, family, and country of Daly River NT. It speaks from the heart, exploring her journey from adolescence into womanhood. It expresses her pain and anger, captures the joy of first love and the cruelty of domestic violence. It is also a story of hope. Underpinning the play is the strength of Tessa, her resilience to overcome the obstacles on her own, her drive to achieve and succeed in this oppressive country. An oppression that faces all aboriginal people in the past, the present and without change, the future.

In a one-woman show about to open in Darwin, The Daly River Girl, audiences will see a personal story that's all too familiar to many. But stories of domestic violence and inappropriate foster care are tempered with moments of warmth and humour.
