THE MAN WHO BECAME SANTA

$5.40$15.00

A long-term unemployed writer Alan Bleak and his part-time TAFE teacher wife Lucy are members of the middle-aged 'precariat' (too old to hire, too young to retire). When Alan lands a job as a Santa Claus in a suburban shopping mall, he is confronted by his darkest fears and his life begins to unravel.

A black comedy with satirical fantasy elements, THE MAN WHO BECAME SANTA is an unusual encounter with the Jolly Fat Man in Red and what meaning he may still have in our ruthless money-making, profit-driven world.

EXTRACT: Christmas is a bit of a hit and miss thing in our family. My mum gets hit when my dad is drunk or high. And it’s a day my sisters and I prefer to miss. Except for this one Christmas. That’s a special memory. One I won’t let go of in a hurry.

EXTRACT: So dedicated am I that I begin to dress as Santa on me days off. Yep, it’s true. Going down the shops, the TAB, the local Chinese, the pokies. Everywhere I go I spread joy and happiness. I am a rock star, the Pope and Elvis all rolled into one. It is the most amazing feeling, like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Total love, worship, adoration. Instant recognition and fame.
