Alex and Paddy share a room in a run-down boarding house. Alex is dominating and aggressive but he is dependent on Paddy's practical abilities to cook, fix the car, fix the heater. Alex has a "best mate" Dinga: "We'd do anything for each other. No sacrifice would be big enough, even death. Understand that?" Alex's dependence on Paddy manifests itself violently and Paddy is evicted to make way for Dinga. In the end, though, the possibility of losing power to the dominant Dinga causes Alex to rethink and try to resolve the situation through extreme violence.
