FIFO - FIT IN OR F--K OFF!

by Melody Dia

Disintegration and hope in a fractured land.

Their boom went bust, and now Jono’s locked in a desert mine site donga, trapped in debt and a lifestyle that is slowly strangling his soul. His wife Mary is locked into the high-flying life of the lonely FIFO parent and has decided they’d be better off cutting their losses and move home, close to her family and younger sister Janey. But the old neighbourhood, and her sister, ain’t what they used to be. Janey is locked in her house, sliding into stand-up comedy delusion as she awaits her FIFO husband Brad’s return. But where is Brad? And where’s their two-year-old daughter Katie?
Something’s gotta give, but what will it take to stop the slide into the deepening pit that threatens to engulf them all?

In a country abundant with natural resources, mining is a way of life. This warm, tautly written drama, blackly comic in places, pulls no punches as it explores the struggle of two First Nations FIFO families trying to pull themselves back from the brink of disintegration and the full impact that mining has had on them. Based on the lived experience of the author and drawn from extensive interviews with miners from across the country.

Developed in Broome with Goolarri Media’s Indigenous Writers program, and with the support of Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, Playwriting Australia, Ilbijerri Theatre Company and Yellamundie First Nations Play Festival, FIFO, Fit In Or F… Off! brings us an exciting new voice from the Kimberley, former FIFO mine worker Melody Dia.
