REDEMPTION

by Anthony Crowley

One night in a forgotten country parish – two priests are reunited. Ben is the new face of the Catholic Church, sent to investigate a retired Monsignor accused of sexually abusing a boy, thirty years ago. Terry is his neglected mentor, approaching retirement, a priest who believes the mercy of Christ can redeem even the most heinous of sinners.

Ben is at the forefront of the Royal Commission into child sexual abuse, a middle man between the church and the police, determined to right the wrongs of the past. Beneath the surface he is tormented by his dwindling faith.

At first Terry seems harmless, frail, absent-minded, but is in fact, jealous and controlling, constantly undermining Ben who has been having an affair with a married woman. Terry knows Ben’s secret and will use it to bring him back to the fold - and protect Monsignor.

As Terry wears Ben down, the truth unravels and Ben confesses. But Terry gets much more that he bargained for - as Ben continues to unravel - drinking, flailing, finally ready to confront his demons and the priest who sexually abused him as a boy.
