Submitting for Publication
APT‘s catalogue is the world’s largest online showcase and searchable database of the best Australian playwriting. The plays of the catalogue are either published by one of our partnering publishers or by APT itself.
Script submissions are currently closed, but will open periodically, along with the publication criteria.
IF MY PLAY IS PUBLISHED, WHAT ABOUT DISTRIBUTION?
Distribution through APT involves a simple agreement authorising APT to sell the script and associated photocopy licences. Full copyright ownership rests with the playwright.
WHAT ABOUT PRODUCTION ENQUIRIES?
When we negotiate the publishing license with you, you can choose for APT to negotiate production rights on your behalf. Or you can choose for you or your agent to take on the rights negotiation – if someone wishes to produce your play, the enquiry is promptly forwarded to you or to your agent. If you wish to proceed with the production, negotiation of production rights will happen in the way you’ve chosen.
WHAT'S THE ROYALITY STRUCTURE?
Playwrights receive the following royalties and payments from APT:
- Script sales – 30% of selling price
- Copy licences – 50% of fees received
- Production fees – 90% of fees received
Royalty payments for script sales and photocopy licences are calculated annually and paid in the first quarter of the following year. If $25 is not reached in one year, the amount is carried forward into the next year.
Production fees are forwarded to the playwright within 30 days of the production's final performance. This is dependent on APT receiving box office summaries and full payment of the royalties from the producer.
