EXTRACT: Let's start from scratch. It's a dead still, dry season, never-never night in the small town of Goadabuggerai; not a star for the askin', it's tarblack as far back as the blind eye can't see and dark as a blackfella's navel. The dirt roads are dead silent, now, as the bush hard by holds its harsh breath and slumps down past hushed mudflats, smallpocked by the black eyes of yabbie pools, to the dream-haunted shores of the Mulga Lagoon, where dunnarts and wattled-bats, wallaroos and water rats fumble and forage for their wide-eyed lives.

EXTRACT: They proved it, yer know. The scientists, I mean. Beyond a shadow of a doubt. Did some tests over in Oxford - that's a very old and very wise Pommie university - where they put these sheilas in a cage wiv some rats, 'n wired 'em all up on their brains. 'N they asked them all a whole series of really probing questions - you know, how do you change the pushrod and rocker activated overhead valves on an FJ Holden when your nuts've fused. That sort of thing.
