PROGRAM FOR: emerging playwrights in regional/remote areas. national.

APPLICATION PERIOD: 15th March to 21st April

APPLICATIONS LINK: applications are now closed.

PROGRAM TIMEFRAME: June-November

  • 16 meeting hours (either in person or virtually) between playwright and dramaturg across the program period
  • Time for the travel component (decided by participants)

PROGRAM FOR: mid-career playwrights with a chosen collaborator. national.

APPLICATION PERIOD: 15th March to 21st April

PROGRAM TIMEFRAME: June-November

  • 3 hours per month for the 6 months of the program

PROGRAM FOR: Playwrights with a new play to work on, who identify with either of three cohorts : 

  • Playwrights with Disability
  • Emerging Playwrights
  • Mid-Career Playwrights

Applicants will be encouraged to choose the cohort they most wish to be a part of.

APPLICATION PERIOD: Friday 29 March – Sunday May 5th 11:59pm AEST

PROGRAM TIMEFRAME: June-November

  • 12, two-hour long sessions, happening fortnightly
  • Sessions will run in the evenings (AEDT/AEST)
  • Each cohort’s sessions will be at the same day/time each fortnight (e.g. Tuesdays 7-9pm)
  • All sessions and program activities will occur virtually (i.e. there is no in-person commitment)

PARTICIPANTS ANNOUNCED: early June. The playwrights in each group are:

  • Playwrights with Disability – Busty Beatz, Christine Davey, Christopher Bryant, Daley Rangi, Meret Hassanen, Michele Saint-Yves, and Ryan Enniss. Led by Anthea Williams, with Sarah Carroll as the Junior Dramaturg.
  • Mid-Career Playwrights – Alison Mann, Alison Rooke, Mary-Anne Butler, Roshelle Fong, Steve Pirie, and Tom Ballard. Led by Wesley Enoch, Ryan Whitworth-Jones as the Junior Dramaturg.
  • Emerging Playwrights – Anna Loren, Chenturan Aran, Danny Ball, Eloise Snape, Louise Baxter, Sarah Peters, and Vivian Nguyen. Led by Anthea Williams, with Jasper Lee-Lindsay as the Junior Dramaturg.

PROGRAM FOR: Anyone with experience working on new play development who’d like to join APT’s pool of potential program readers/assessors panels.

APPLICATION PERIOD: year-round; ongoing

APPLICATIONS LINK: Expressions of Interest form is available here.

PROGRAM TIMEFRAME: ongoing, as required by programs. Usually reading/assessing periods run across 2-4 weeks and require between approx. 20-40 hours of time. Further details are provided to potential readers when they are invited to join a readers panel.

PARTICIPANTS ANNOUNCED: Not applicable here! We’ll reach out to potential readers as we build the assessment panels for each program.

 

PROGRAM FOR: Kaurna/South Australia-based dramaturgs who identify as First Nations, CaLD, and/or People of Colour.

APPLICATION PERIOD: Wednesday 19 June – Sunday 14 July (midnight, ACST) 2024

PROGRAM TIMEFRAME: July – November 2024

  • Placement equivalent to 4 weeks full time

PARTICIPANTS ANNOUNCED: 2024’s Dramaturgs are: Alexis West, Anthony Nocera, Bonet Leate, Kate Cheel, Ting Zhang. Full post here!

SUPPORTED BY: the South Australian Department of the Premier and Cabinet through Arts South Australia.

PROGRAM FOR: Australian First Nations playwrights – or writers looking to expand into play writing – with a new play to work on.

APPLICATION PERIOD: July 12th – August 4th, closing at midnight AWST

APPLICATIONS LINK: applications are now closed.

PROGRAM TIMEFRAME

  • Retreat Dates: October 14-24th
  • Development Period: November. Developments are customised to the playwright and their needs, so the time commitment can be flexible.

PROGRAM FEE: The retreat fee is $2520. Retreat accommodation, food, and travel for the program are also provided by APT.

Q&A DATE: Tuesday 23rd July, 6pm AEST (5:30pm ACST, 4pm AWST)

PARTICIPANTS ANNOUNCED: September – full post here! This year’s playwrights are: Alexis West, Bjorn Stewart, Jada Alberts, Jenny Fraser, John Harding, and Nicola Ingram. 

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH: Bundanon, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, Moogahlin Performing Arts Inc, Ilbijerri Theatre Company

SUPPORTED BY: the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and receives funding from Creative Australia through the Australian Cultural Fund.

AWARD FOR: playwrights aged 18-40 with a new, full-length work ready for development.

THE WINNER RECEIVES: A $15,000 cash prize and a bespoke, week-long development running between May and November, produced by APT, worth $15,000.

SUPPORTED BY: The Thelma Afford Trust, managed by Perpetual, as Trustee.

PROGRAM FOR: emerging & mid-career playwrights based in Naarm/Melbourne. Run by La Mama Theatre in partnership with APT.

APPLICATION PERIOD: closed on March 3rd.

PROGRAM TIMEFRAME: July-September

  • Sessions weekly on Mondays and monthly on Sundays
  • Intensive week 23rd-29th September
  • 18 hours of dramaturgical support

SUPPORTED BY: John T Reid Charitable Trusts, the Australian Government through Creative Australia.

 

AWARD FOR: playwrights with a pitch for a new, full-length play.

THE WINNER RECEIVES: A full commission ($17,400) and dramaturgical support to develop their work in-house at Griffin.

WINNER ANNOUNCED: Congratulations Jules Orcullo for their play ‘My Dad Never Saw The Beatles’ ! This was announced at the Griffin Award Keynote, on July 28th. More info on Griffin’s website
