Australian Plays Transform has drawn on its extensive collection to highlight the following scripts that are required or recommended for students studying senior Drama in Western Australia.

 

Year 11 Drama Curriculum

 

UNIT 1: REPRESENTATIONAL, REALIST DRAMA

The Western Australian Senior Drama Curriculum states:

Drama forms and styles

  • interpretation of representational, realist drama forms and styles (Realism, Naturalism) by shaping the elements of drama
  • relationships between representational, realist drama and linear narrative structures (p 8)

 

TEXTS

There is no set text list for the Drama ATAR course in Year 11. A suggested text list is provided to assist teachers to choose texts of an appropriate pitch and theoretical focus for each unit. Teachers may nominate other texts to study with their students that address the theoretical focus and content of Unit 1 or Unit 2… In this unit, students must study two additional script excerpts, not necessarily from the Set text list (see below). Each script excerpt should allow students exposure to different ideas and approaches to drama (SCSA, Drama, p. 3).

UNIT 2: PRESENTATIONAL, NON-REALIST DRAMA

The Western Australian Senior Drama Curriculum states:

Students explore

  • Interpretation of presentational, non-realist drama forms and styles (such as Brechtian Epic Theatre, Shakespearean Theatre) by shaping the elements of drama
  • Relationships between presentational, non-realist drama and non-linear narrative structures

Year 12 Drama Curriculum

 

UNIT 3: REINTERPRETATION OF DRAMA FOR CONTEMPORARY AUDIENCES

The Western Australian Senior Drama Curriculum states:

Drama forms and styles

  • reinterpretation of historical and contemporary forms and styles by manipulating the elements of drama and directing and design processes through improvisation and collaborative processes
  • relationships between selected forms and styles appropriate to chosen texts shaped by viewpoints

In Unit 3, students must study two additional script excerpts, not necessarily from the Set text list. Each script excerpt should allow students exposure to different ideas and approaches to drama. In the written examination, students may refer to these excerpts, but the focus of their answer must be on the set text studied in this unit.

UNIT 4: CONTEMPORARY AND DEVISED DRAMA

The Western Australian Senior Drama Curriculum states:

Drama forms and styles

  • selection of dramatic forms and styles to create dramatic meaning for audiences and contexts by manipulating and controlling the elements of drama, directing and design processes
  • personal style informed by existing forms, styles and contemporary approaches

In this unit, students must study two additional script excerpts, not necessarily from the Set text list. Each script excerpt should allow students exposure to different ideas and approaches to drama. In the written examination, students may refer to these excerpts, but the focus of their answer must be on the set text studied in this unit.
