Surface of the Moon is the story of a young girl's perception of difference and how it can damage the spirit unless one has particular strategies for survival. Set in a fluid space, we become privy to Mary's world and her ability to survive the racism and dogmatism of the move from Malta to Queenstown and how this presented her with the strength to survive the move from Queenstown to Sydney.
Originally done with a cast of four adults, there are 15 roles.

EXTRACT: I am dragged in front of the Reverend Mother and reprimanded for "swearing". I do not know this word "swearing". I am still little. And she will not help me. But somewhere inside me I do know that talking in my beloved Maltese has put me in a space capsule - isolated, alone, and the object of derision. I know now the meaning of the word "fear". And I start to know the meaning of the word "angry".
