Difficult to Grow is made up of three monologues telling stories which intersect each other -- each monologue adding texture and depth to the next. Two of the characters have an intellectual disability. The third is the woman who takes care of them. Each of characters must face his/her past in order to live more successfully in the present.

EXTRACT: I'm Pete Flick and I'm fast. I think things that come and go so fast you have to be quick to catch them and if the things I think get too fast then I can run - up and down, round and round, faster and faster so the things I think can't catch me. I live in a Home for fast thinkers who need Medication. We stand in a line every morning and wait for our green drink in a white cup.

EXTRACT: I am Sue. My Dad called me Simple Sue and put me in a home for retards. Doctor Bell says I am special and tells Dad off. I am a grown up now and I can catch a tram to the shops by myself. Today I buy red frogs from Arthur's. He winks one eye at me. I try to wink back but both eyes close together. I buy a Mixed Berry Yoghurt and a packet of Scotch Fingers from Shoprite and save them for home.

EXTRACT: Daphne is standing on the window ledge looking out towards the roof. When I call out her name she turns towards me; the bruise has gone from her forehead, I can see in her eyes that she recognises me. I say 'Daphne don't!' She calls to me 'my mother!' and then she jumps and there's nothing left but Daphne inside me.
