Set around Amelia Bradshaw’s eighth birthday party, the play uses nursery rhymes as a structural device to explore characters and tell its story. Like any birthday party on the surface the play appears to be fun, lively and energetic. Yet lurking beneath the familiar delight are stories that are confronting and sobering. In both the children’s and adult’s worlds there are bullies and victims, tragedies and triumphs, stories of humour and those of pathos. Through its patchwork use of monologues, party games, dramatic and comic vignettes, a play-within-a-play, and its narrator-clown the play reveals the events of a single afternoon and in doing so creates a funny, poignant picture of modern life. It is a picture that, at its heart, tells the story of Amelia Bradshaw who is turning more than just eight. Much more.
