EXTRACT: I am the hospital. Walking down the corridor toward his room. Throat knotted tight as a boxer's fist. Stopping at the door. Tears welling. I look in and - he's there - on his bed - shrunken and bruised and yellow. I turn away and bite down tears. I look again and he's just staring out his window, out to the water. I clear my throat and walk in. We stare at each other for several seconds until I can't hold his gaze and look away.
