In the aftermath of a custody case, gay children's author Neil wins custody of his teenage son Luke, aided by his housemate Quentin, who pretends they are a long-term couple in order to win the case from flaky mum Sabrina.
An emotional tussle ensues when Sabrina, Luke's mum, enlists the help of a wildlife keeper to try to win her son back.
As Luke and the keeper chart the progress of Lulu, a wounded wombat, Luke starts to thrive in his new, nurturing environment. The boy and the wombat are on a parallel course of healing, driving all parties towards a bitter-sweet conclusion.
