Barry Kay was brought up on a dairy farm in North West Tasmania. He trained as an actor at the Victorian College of the Arts before working in community theatre with the Murray River Performing Group in Albury Wodonga and then Back to Back Theatre in Geelong. Back to Back is Australia's only professional theatre company comprising artists with an intellectual disability.
Barry has also written and worked with companies such as Salamanca Theatre, Terrapin Puppet Theatre, Zootango Theatre and various schools, festivals and freelance companies.
He is currently Interpretive Theatre Manager at Sovereign Hill outdoor museum in Ballarat where he develops museum theatre works interpreting the goldrush history of Ballarat and Victoria.
