Marilyn Campbell

Marilyn Campbell writes humorous children’s stories and plays. She has a unique talent with language, especially when she is painting a vivid scene or bringing characters to life.

Always inspired by the strength, determination and sense of humour of children everywhere, Marilyn loves to write for them. Her children’s book, The Wild Monkey Girl (Catbird Media 2009), has been sold to Australian schools and libraries and selected on merit for the retail shop of the National Library of Australia. Her children’s play, Puss in Boots, is in the collection of Australian Plays Tranform (ATP).

Marilyn is a past winner of the highly coveted Bronze Swagman Award for Bush Verse for her poem Lester’s Tale, along with additional bush poetry awards. Her other writing includes short stories and screenplays.

Professionally, Marilyn has worked as a researcher in Los Angeles for Universal Studios; in script development at Twentieth Century Fox with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Alvin Sargent (Academy Award winning screenwriter of Julia and Ordinary People; more recently the screenwriter of Spiderman); and Warner Brothers where she was commissioned to do a breakdown of the novel Empire of the Sun for producer Robert Shapiro and director Steven Spielberg. In Australia, she has worked as a film and TV script assessor for State funding organisations and as a screenplay assessor for freelance writers.

Her academic background includes an Honours degree in English Literature from California State University. She lives on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
