Kate Mulvany

Kate Mulvany OAM is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter and actor. Her epic adaptation of the Ruth Park trilogy The Harp in the South played to great acclaim for the Sydney Theatre Company in 2018, and she followed this with her adaptation of Schiller’s Mary Stuart for the company in 2019. Her play The Rasputin Affair was produced at the Ensemble Theatre and her play Jasper Jones, an adaptation of Craig Silvey’s novel, has enjoyed great success at Belvoir Street Theatre, MTC, QTC and State Theatre Company of South Australia after its Barking Gecko premiere in 2015. In 2015 Mulvany’s play Masquerade, a reimagining of the much loved children’s book by Kit Williams, was performed at the 2015 Sydney Festival and the State Theatre Company of South Australia as well as Melbourne Festival, produced by Griffin Theatre Company. Her autobiographical play The Seed (Belvoir Street Theatre) won the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Independent Production. With Mulvany performing in the play, it received great critical success and toured nationally, and is currently being developed into a work for screen. Mulvany’s Medea, co-written with Anne-Louise Sarks, having been produced by Belvoir Street Theatre in 2012, won several awards including an AWGIE Award and five Sydney Theatre Awards, and has gone on to be produced in Poland, Basel, Auckland and at the Gate Theatre in London, to rave reviews. Other plays and musicals include The Mares for the Tasmanian Theatre Company, The Danger Age, Blood and Bone, The Web, the musical Somewhere (music by Tim Minchin) and Storytime, which won Mulvany the 2004 Philip Parsons Award. As a screenwriter, she has worked on several television series, including Beat Bugs (the Emmy-award-winning series for Netflix) and the critically acclaimed Upright for Lingo Pictures. She is also an award-winning stage and screen actor with credits with many Australian theatre companies, television series and films. Most recently she played the eponymous role in Richard III (Bell Shakespeare) to great critical and popular acclaim, the one-person play Every Brilliant Thing (Belvoir Theatre) and can be seen as Sister Harriet in the acclaimed Amazon Prime series Hunters.
