Candy Bowers

Candy Bowers is an award winning playwright, lyricist, actor, comedian and social activist of South African heritage. Candy is a member of the Equity Diversity Committee and a fierce advocate for women and femmes of colour in the arts. Her original works for stage include Inna Thigh the Sista She Story and The Naked MC (co-written with S Ward), Australian Booty, MC Platypus and Queen Koala’s Hip Hop Jamboree, Who’sThat Chik?, Twelve, a Soul Musical from the Streets and Hot Brown Honey Burlesque (co-written with K Bowers and L Fa’alafi). Her acting credits include: Marti in House of Bernarda Alba, Stage-Hand-In-Charge and Music Consultant on Straight White Men, Charles Penworth in Lilith The Jungle Girl by Sisters Grimm (Melbourne Theatre Company), Camae in The Mountaintop (Queensland Theatre) and Hester in In The Blood (BSharp/Belvoir). Candy’s TV credits include Metrosexual (9now/9go), The Ex-PM, Get Krack!n, Tonightly with Tom Ballard (ABC) and The Cry (BBC.) In 2018 Candy was awarded the Geoffrey Milne Award for Outstanding Contribution to Independent Theatre by the Green Room Award Association, 2017 Best Female Actor- Theatre (nomination)and 2017 Best Ensemble-Theatre Winner. In 2017 Hot Brown Honey won the Helpmann Award for Best Cabaret Production and in 2016 the UK Total Theatre Award for Innovation and Experimentation. Candy is currently expanding into screen, her first independent feature film has been picked up by Robert Connolly and Arena Media. She is also the 2019 recipient of the Australians in Film (AiF) and Screen Australia 12-month MentorLA program, and has been matched with Peter Saji, the Executive Producer and Showrunner of TV series Blackish.
