SOPHIA SIMMONS

Sophia Simmons is a South Australian playwright currently living in Melbourne. She received her Masters of Writing for Performance from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2018 and has since had her work produced in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

Her work often explores intimate questions about the human condition through the lens of science fiction and futurism. Sophia is driven by curiosity and love of science and philosophy - bringing big concepts to the theatre while also investigating the small moments that make us human.

Her first play Brightness was the winner of the Flinders University Young Playwright Award in 2013. She was then a participant in the Australian Theatre for Young People’s ‘Fresh Ink’ mentorship throughout 2014 under the guidance of playwright Nicki Bloom, and in 2015 she was featured in the National Play Festival with her play Limit.

In 2018 Sophia was awarded the inaugural Pioneer Playwright Award for her play Gravity Guts which premiered in the 2019 Adelaide Fringe and went on to have two more productions that year with Sydney company Company of Rogues. In 2019 her play Limit was staged as the State Theatre SA’s Umbrella Production under the direction of Shannon Rush.

She has had two works commissioned by 2020 South Australian youth theatre company SAYArts, Only Human in 2020, and One Day He Was Here (And The Next He Was Gone) in 2021.

Her monologue Summer feature in State Theatre SA’s Decacameron 2.0 and Her short film Hermit (Crab) premiered with Periscope Productions Stargazers project as part of Melbourne Fringe 2020.
