Bruce Shearer has written and produced a number of plays at small Melbourne theatres (La Mama, Carlton Courthouse). He has written radio drama for ABC Audio Arts as well as a number of plays aimed at youth audiences, which have been performed at schools and universities in Melbourne and Adelaide and in a number of schools across Poland. In several of his plays he has written the lyrics and collaborated with composers. In 1996, a musical production of The Absolutely Awesome Giant (Panstwowy Teatr 'Lalka' Warsaw) and an opera The Cantankerous Caterpillar (Pleciuga Puppet Theatre, Szczecin) were performed in Polish children's theatres.
