Hellie Turner

Hellie is a prolific, veteran playwright/director with numerous awards and production credits to her name. She has written for all sectors of theatre. As resident playwright for kompany M, professional WA theatre ensemble 2005-2010, her work attracted a number of tours. She teaches the craft of playwriting and works as a dramaturg / script assessor. Hellie mentors new and emerging playwrights, having worked with new writers from Yirra Yaakin Theatre (WA) for the past decade.

Her produced plays include BENCH 2003, BILLY WINDLOCK 2006 [Maj Monologue winner], SARDINES 2006, The GUN 2007, LUV STRUK 2008, JEEPERS CREEPERS 2008, BONE DRY 2009 [Premiers Book Award nomination], ROADTRAIN 2010, ANYTOWN 2011 [Premiers Book Award nomination & PAWA nomination], MAD FRED - the musical 2014, The DREAMING HILL 2015 [AWGIE nomination], PROJECT XAN 2016 [PAWA nomination], SELF PORTRAIT MASTURBATING 2017, The LIGHTHOUSE GIRL 2017, LESSON in the ART OF BUTTERFLY 2020 (Unsung Heroes - digital).

Hellie won the WA Premiers Book Award [for script] in 2003 for BENCH, and in 2006 for SARDINES. She was also a 2010 Richard Burton Award winner for her script The TIME of TEXAS WALL … now adapted into a novel.

In 2012 her script MESH was showcased at the International Playwrights Festival in London. Then in 2013 she was invited to the HOTink at The Lark Festival in New York to showcase her play BELA KIZ, which was later short-listed for the 503 Theatre Award, London [2015]. A recently completed script, The PARADE, is currently in pre-production in London.
