Penelope Upward

Penelope Upward comes from a family dedicated to the arts for four generations. Her brother is Peter Upward, whose paintings are displayed in all major galleries in Australia. Peter and Penelope grew up in the paint room behind His Majesty's Theatre Melbourne where their grandfather George Upward designed the stage sets and painted the giant backdrops. Penelope trained as a painter and undertook filmmaking (Aboriginal Land Rights NSW-1980), and then after two graduate years at ANU, took up writing. Penelope holds a number of qualifications including BA Visual Arts, Grad. Dip. of Education, Grad. Dip. of Art History and Curatorship ANU, and Cert. II in Conservation & Cultural Preservation. Penelope has adapted her play Florrie Forde as a screenplay.
