Vanessa Bates

Vanessa is an award-winning playwright (NSW Premiers Literary Award and most recently 2019 AWGIE Award for Theatre for Young Audiences) and screenwriter. Plays include A Ghost In My Suitcase (the play), Trailer, Light Begins To Fade, Every Second, The Magic Hour, PORN.CAKE, Checklist For An Armed Robber and Darling Oscar. Television includes EastWest 101(SBS), Rush (Channel 10), Play School (ABCTV), Twentyfourseven (SBS) and the ABCTV feature-length documentary 900 Neighbours. Short films include Pop’s Dream and The HoneyEaters. For television, Vanessa is currently working with Ross Mueller to write two comedy drama series; lovelife (Princess Pictures) and Troubled Youth. Vanessa has been produced at Malthouse Theatre, Barking Gecko, Sydney Theatre Company, Darlinghurst Theatre, Black Swan Theatre, Griffin, Deckchair, Theatre@Risk, atyp, Tantrum and many others. She is a playwrighting mentor/teacher, an AWG Playwrights Committee member, a NIDA Playwrights Studio graduate and one seventh of playwrights’ company 7ON. She is also completing a PhD in Scriptwriting.
