JANE CAFARELLA

Jane Cafarella is an Australian playwright and former journalist whose plays have been produced in Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart, Perth, Singapore, London and Aberdeen.

Jane’s first full-length play, e-baby, about the relationship between an infertile woman and the surrogate she hires, premiered in Melbourne in 2015, receiving three professional productions in three years (Chapel Off Chapel, Melbourne, 2015, with direction and dramaturgy by Anna McCrossin-Owen, Ensemble Theatre, Sydney, 2016, directed by Nadia Tass, Tasmanian Theatre Company, Hobart, 2017, directed by Anne Cordiner and Julie Waddington.)

e-baby received outstanding reviews and the Hobart production was nominated for Best Production (Professional) at the 2018 Tasmanian Theatre Awards. Katie Robertson, who played Nellie, won for Best Performance (Female) in a Professional Production.
e-baby also had a highly successful rehearsed reading in London at the So and So Arts Club in 2015, resulting in it being published by UK company Stage Scripts.

In October 2018, e-baby was produced by Theatre major Natalia Kirychuk at Cedarville University, Ohio. The Melbourne Lyceum Club will also produce the play for a private performance in February 2019, and Aequitis Theatre in London will produce the play for its 2020 season.

In Singapore, where Jane lived from 2012 to 2018, she formed her own company, producing short plays - three of which were translated into Tamil.

Her quirky one-act play, Supersnout, has been produced in Melbourne, Perth and Aberdeen and will soon have its London debut at the Lighthorne Festival of One Act Plays.
Jane’s second full-length play, d-baby - a companion play to e-baby, but not a sequel - was recently named as a finalist in the international playwriting competition New Works of Merit, established by playwright and producer Sandra Nordgren in 2003 to bring "works of social significance to the attention of producers and artistic directors".
