Marcel Dorney

Marcel Dorney is a writer, director and performer. He was born in Brisbane, graduated from the University of Queensland, and currently practices in Melbourne. His work includes commissions by Queensland Theatre Company, Merrigong Theatre Company, Hothouse Theatre, La Boite, Brisbane Powerhouse, Backbone Youth Theatre, and Melbourne’s Next Wave Festival, and has been published by Playlab Press. Marcel is a co-founder of Melbourne-based performance company Elbow Room, who have received multiple awards for their work in several cities since 2008, including Best Performance at the 2011 Melbourne Fringe Festival for After All This. Marcel’s play New Royal also received two Matilda Awards in 2006, including Best New Work.

Marcel has been as associate writer of Griffin Theatre and the Restaged Histories Project, as well as Melbourne’s Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre. He received a 2002 BCC Lord Mayor’s Performing Arts Fellowship to study with the Maly Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia. He is currently completing a Masters by Research in Directing through the VCA at the University of Melbourne, as part of which his most recent play, Kassandra, was produced in May. Charcoal Creek, commissioned by Merrigong Theatre Company, will be produced in 2012.
