By 1946, George Orwell was widowed, a single parent, increasingly ill with tuberculosis and finally famous thanks to the success of his 'Fairy Story', Animal Farm. In order to find the best conditions in which to work on his new novel, Orwell decamps with his family to a remote farmhouse on the Isle of Jura off the west coast of Scotland. There, in the grip of fractious weather, he battles to complete his masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty Four, while keeping his severe illness at bay and balancing the demands of fatherhood, art, family and success.

101 fuses biography with imagination as Orwell rehearses scenes for his work, confronts his guilt over the death of his first wife and strives through it all to produce a novel the like of which the world had never seen.

EXTRACT: My father was not a powerful man. Anger is not the same as power. I don’t know whether he knew love. I did not see him for many years when I was young. When I saw him again he did not understand me. Not until I was much older. I only came to him finally as an adult. Even then I am not sure he was ready.
