BABY ‘X’

A RED DOOR PUBLICATION

Georgie and Evelyn are a couple searching for a sperm donor. Enter Adam - and Baby X is conceived.

Campion Decent takes us on a nine month journey of confusion, denial and exultation, smashing a few notions of the traditional family along the way. Fabulously theatrical and very very queer, Baby X is short, sharp and snappy.

Originally produced as part of the 2000 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, this is a provocative and hilarious vision of a family in the 21st century.

"It is plays like this that remind me that the true path - the path that will lead us in to the light - is one of tolerance, love, humour and compassion."
- Tom Healey, Australian Plays Literary Manager and Red Door Curator (2010-2018).

EXTRACT: Dear Mr Crisp. i am writing to you in Heaven because you are the newly appointed god of Queer Baby Names. The lesbian mothers of our project have requested naming suggestions. This is a matter of some urgency. Let me say at the outset that i would never presume to use Quentin. And i have already ruled out Butch, Lance and Sebastian for a boy; and Chastity, Gertrude and Virginia for a girl.

FROM GAY MAN TO GAY DAD, AND MIDNIGHT FEEDS TO RAVE REVIEWS

WENDY TUOHY, GAYDADSAUSTRALIA.WORDPRESS.COM, 16 APRIL 2000

“It is an inherently interesting story to some people, but at the same time it’s so regular. It’s so mundane, it’s so much about the normal parenting issues of vomit on the baby’s bib, and the cold, and the wake-up in the middle of the night..."
