BED

$5.40$15.00

Bed follows an acerbic character, Phil, through the five most significant sexual relationships of his life. His lovers include schoolboy Kane, 14; earnest university student Daisy, 19; reluctant trophy-wife Grace, 34; party-boy Drew, 29; and beautiful old septuagenarian Flo.

A blackly comic exploration of masculine sexuality, the story is told through pillow-talk on five different beds, which represent Phil's attitudes to sexuality at age 14, 21, 30, 46 and 67. The narrative revisits each of these relationships three times before Phil's death in the last scene.

EXTRACT: Drew, you have nothing going for you but that you have the ability to almost amuse me the closer you get to death. I believe we may have stumbled upon a crazy kind of love like that Drew. I believe so. Nod. Yes that's right Drew. Nod. Should I ash this out in your eyeball? What have I ever done to you I hear you say. Phil, old bitter Phil. Fat as a vineyard Phil. Boring old cunted Phil. What have I ever done to you Phil? Is that what you're saying with your little beady eyes?

REVIEW: BED, PRESENTED BY ONE YEAR LEASE

SARAH DOYLE, AUSTRALIANSTAGE.COM.AU, APRIL 2007

"Brendan Cowell’s play BED scrutinises in retrospect the mistakes in one man’s love-life from a distance, from a hyper-dramatic viewpoint, as if speaking from the memories of a deadman, as if viewing a life as a slide show, analysing the boys, girls, men, women that haunt the regrets of a man called Phil."
