Two men in 18th century costume meet in a jungle. One of them, carrying a small breadfruit tree in a pot, is the famous sea captain, William Bligh, of the mutiny on the 'Bounty'. The other is Fintan Standish, a once high profile eccentric Australian historian who has just posed a provocative question: 'Was William Bligh responsible for the death of this mentor, Captain Cook?' Standish is dying of cancer and, in his dance with death, his morphia-fed dreams grow to include Bligh, doctor Cathy and nurse Mervyn - as he tries to make sense of a life dominated by his favourite subject.
