Cliff Wheeler, a disenchanted journalist, is stranded by floods at the remote Nulla Downs Roadhouse. The proprietor, Maxie Bishop, seems to be hiding an intriguing guest, who could be the source of a breakthrough story to prop up Cliff's languishing career. As supplies and sanity diminish, Cliff is forced to question the authenticity of his life and the reality of his current situation. Does the mysterious Ruth deLatour really exist? If not, who is playing the violin and why does it unhinge Cliff so completely? What are the ethics of exposing those who have suffered in the public eye? Will Cliff eventually face his failure demons and his irrascible editor, stop writing drivel for the local paper and tackle his long neglected novel? Which deadline will Cliff ultimately miss?
