Is This Thing On?

Published in Downstairs at Belvoir Volume 2

Brianna is a stand-up comedian. This is her life: an unfortunate name, a boring childhood, slow self-realisation, a late coming-out. Drink. Standing in smelly rooms with strange men who all tell the same jokes. Vomiting on stage. Carrying on anyway. Is there a reason? Probably not - just a way of coping with your own mediocrity. Whose life is this anyway?

IS THIS THING ON? REVIEW: LAUGH UNTIL YOU DIE...

JASON BLAKE, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 5 OCTOBER 2014

"Is This Thing On? draws on Coombs Marr's experience in and observations of the comedy scene. Is it funny? Yes it is, laugh-out-loud funny (when it's not being deliberately unfunny, that is) but there's more to it than that."

REVIEW: IS THIS THING ON?

BEN NEUTZE, DAILY REVIEW, 6 OCTOBER 2014

"It goes without saying that there’s a fine, fine line between comedy and tragedy — between triumph and disaster — and it’s a tightrope that comedians walk night after night. In Zoe Coombs Marr’s Is This Thing On? we follow the life and career of Brianna, a stand-up comedian, through five different nights on the same stage, as she’s played by five different women."

ELISSA BLAKE, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 25 SEPTEMBER 2014

Interview with Zoe Coombs Marr about her new play, Is This Thing On?

ZOE COOMBS MARR AND KIT BROOKMAN ON IS THIS THING ON?

DEE JEFFERSON, TIMEOUT SYDNEY, 29 SEPTEMBER 2014

"One writer, two directors, five actresses – Zoe and Kit wrangle a life in stand-up onto the downstairs stage at Belvoir."
