Based on Joseph Conrad's great novella Heart of Darkness, Kurtz follows the journey of ship captain Charles Marlow up the Congo River to meet the mysterious company agent Mr Kurtz. In a parallel story not in the novella and created for the play, back in Europe Kurtz's fiancée Helena Berger is courted by an American tycoon, Nelson Carter. After Kurtz's death and Marlow's return to England, Marlow is sought out by Carter who wants to understand what it was about Kurtz that made it so hard for him to court and keep Helena.
