The play is set in the present day outside the Pearly Gates. Mary has sent invitations to Bishop Sheil and Father Julian Woods for a reunion. Mary asks the audience to judge whether she is worthy of sainthood. Mary also passes judgement on the Bishop and Father Julian by reminding them (by way of re-enactment) of their many controversial and sometimes cruel actions in the late 1860s and early 1870s. The issues are handled in a lighthearted way.
