At what point does the obligation of obedience to constituted authority cease if that authority degenerates into authoritarianism? In this play a war of words between the austere monk, Girolamo Savonarola and the Renaissance Pope Alexander VI, saint and sinner, is fought out. In Florence the fiery preacher is burnt at the stake. Alexander is with us still.
