'Pope Joan' is a play about love, sacrifice, identity, loyalty, the abuse of power and the hidden history of women in the church. The mediaeval setting was thoroughly researched and is presented in some detail, but this history is interwoven with fiction and speculation. We follow the story of Johanna (Joan), a young woman whose brilliance takes her to the highest office in the Catholic church.
