Svetlana in Slingbacks is about the internal world of the Fretler family, Russian migrants in Adelaide circa 1965, as seen through the eyes of a teenager, Svetlana. Set against the memories of WWII, the Cold War and the Sexual Revolution & Women's Liberation, we see how migration, assimilation and Svetlana's mother's mental illness affect the family's dreams, hopes, fantasies and stability. This play was commissioned in 1997 by Vitalstatistix (SA).
