An adaptation of Shakespeare's play for young audiences.
Antipholus and his servant Dromio arrive in Ephesus searching for their long-lost twin brothers – who also happen to be called Antipholus and Dromio. Meanwhile, their father Egeon has come looking for his sons and been locked up by the Duke. Throw in a jealous wife, her long-suffering sister, a nun, a courtesan, an exorcist, a celebrity jeweller, singing, dancing and quick changes, and it’s a recipe for comedy chaos.
Shakespeare’s story of sundered families is especially timely now, and this playful adaptation gives young audiences easy access to its plot, characters, language and themes.
“There’s absolutely no room for indulgence,†Bell says. “In a play for adults, you can sometimes get away with beautiful language, but when you write for children you have to be quite brutal. If it’s not meaningful, or if it’s not funny, or if it doesn’t advance the story, out it goes.†- Hilary Bell interviewed by Elissa Blake for Audrey Journal, 2019.
"...75 minutes of Shakespeare-themed slapstick and silliness that achieves its goal of acquainting younger audiences with the works of the Bard in an accessible, entertaining and authentic manner." Tim Garratt, Theatre People, 2019.
"A frantic pantomime of Shakespeare's classic comedy of mistaken identity for audiences seven and up." - Jason Blake, Audrey Journal, 2019.
"This clever adaptation of a classical farce finds all the funny and friendly bits and adds the contemporary references to keep the play as relevant as it would have been." - Night Writes Sydney, 2019.
