First Nations Emerging Writers Group

The APT X NIDA First Nations Emerging Writers Group is a national writing collective for First Nations artists and storytellers developing their writing for performance.

Produced by APT and NIDA, the program is for emerging artists developing their skills in writing for performance and wanting to grow their skills and knowledge in dramatic writing. Jada Alberts, acclaimed writer and performer across stage and screen, will lead this pilot program.

Artists will meet online for 8 sessions over the course of 16 weeks to participate in skills workshops, hear from professional writers in the stage and screen industry, and workshop their own writing.

At the end of the program, artists will have access to a network of peers, a solid foundation in writing for the stage or screen, an understanding of the principles of dramatic writing and a short piece of work that has been workshopped and is ready for pitching/further development.

Financial support for all participants is provided via a bursary.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What does “emerging” mean?
Emerging generally means artists in the first eight years of their practice. We understand that different artists have different streams of practice and this can be hard to define. If in doubt, get in touch or submit an application and we’ll help decide whether it’s right for you.

Do I have to have written for performance before?
Not necessarily. This group is open to anyone with an existing arts practice (eg. acting, performance, directing, dance, visual arts, prose storytelling) who has an understanding and interest in performance and wants to write for the stage or screen.

Is this a paid opportunity?
Yes, financial support for participants is provided via a bursary.

Is there an age restriction?
No, you can participate at any age.

Do I have to be in Sydney to participate?
No. This program is all online which means you can join us from anywhere in Australia.
