Set in an ordinary street in an ordinary Australian city, Gloucester Street tells the story of a small group of people: an aging couple who have lived in the same house all their married lives; a single mother with five children; a busybody shop keeper; an isolated young man; three people trying to make their share house work; a lonely single woman; a couple of runaways hiding out in the squat.
The only thing they have in common is their desire to call the terrace houses of Gloucester Street home... So when the mayor and his business associates decide to tear down the terraces in order to build a new high-rise residential building, the welfare of the residents is suddenly at stake.
Originally written for the Hepburn Shir's 'No Place Like Home' community youth arts project, Gloucester Street has a large cast for predominantly young actors (aged 12—18) and is an opportunity for an innovative set design and a variety of music and rap.

EXTRACT: I prayed that Charlie would go. That he would go peacefully in his sleep. That I'd wake up one morning and he'd be gone. And that would be that. He so desperately needed relief. I so desperately needed relief. Desperate, that's what we both were. Desperate and angry and sad and so I prayed. That Charlie that you saw at the end of his life, he wasn't the Charlie I married. The Charlie I married was a big strong kind man, not the big oaf that you saw, so full of anger and violence and pain.

EXTRACT: I just assumed that they'd give Alicia and me half of the money. They've always given us money. That's about it. Money. So I just thought, "Great! This is great." But I didn't really think about it properly, I didn't think about how it would affect people; I was only thinking about myself. Story of my life I suppose. You know, when you're desperate you think about all sorts of weird shit, but I never thought there'd be a death. No way. I mean, I'm stupid, for sure, but I'm not evil.

EXTRACT: And if you ask me I reckon the ones involved, and they know who they are, well they'll get the karma. Look, I know I said that I was a Catholic and all that, but you mark my words, they'll get what's owing to them down the track. They won't get away with this, not just my shop, but any of it. It'll catch up them. I would've killed myself if I'd been given the chance. I was so mad at 'em. Ropable I was.
