As the title suggests, this play turns the age old puppet plays on their head and ‘puts Judy first.’ This is a quartet of short plays dealing with issues related to women. The first play, Many Rivers to Cross, is based on the true story of a woman fleeing her violent husband. Spring Cleaning is also based on a true story about a man learning to share domestic responsibilities and the care of their baby after a couple are involved in a serious car crash. Siren Summer looks at the struggles of a young girl who is abused by her father and makes an unexpected friendship with an eccentric beachcomber. Finally Ron and Julie upends Romeo and Juliet by setting the action in a depressed suburb where the children of two families are at war with each other while the single parents of each family fall in love. Judy and Punch is suitable for performances by Theatre in Education and Youth Theatre companies and is suitable for performance and study by secondary school students.
