A comic/tragic story - lifted from the Leoncavallo opera "I Pagliacci", wherein a clown must perform despite a broken heart - is performed by a troupe of travelling comics in a tent at a NSW seaside resort.
Substituted for the opera's Commedia del'Arte characters are Australian versions of renowned movie comedians, from Charlie Chaplin to the Three Stooges and Robin Williams, from Mae West and Doris Day to Phyllis Diller.
The resultant clash of comedic styles culminates in tragedy.
