This stage version of Don Quixote explores the themes of sanity and madness, human compassion and its twin human cruelty, in a dramatic work that retains the earthy humour and psychological bent of Cervantes’ 400 year old masterwork. Don Quixote is an ageing landholder in a nondescript village in a dusty pocket of Spain. Inspired by romantic stories of knights rescuing maidens and vanquishing giants - the pulp fiction of the 16th Century – he sets out on the road with his squire, Sancho Panza, to defeat wrongdoing and injustice wherever he finds it. Soon all of Spain learns of his bizarre feats, and he gains an unlikely fame as an inspired lunatic. This finally works against him and his own lofty ideals, causing all those around to try to “save him from himself”, prompting a crisis with his own sanity - and with what he has been trying to achieve. Above it all floats the “Dulcinea”, the dream queen of his heart, to whom he dedicates all his struggles against evil - yet who is in reality a milk-maid in the next village.
