Amber takes a job in the big city as a guard in the Art Gallery of NSW, leaving behind her family and her small town troubles. On the second day on the job she foils an attempted theft and becomes an instant hero, courted by the press for interviews. Her heroic deed scores her a job as a security guard at a museum in London. Years pass and she eventually settles in a plumb gallery job in New York. Along the way, she encounters ten visitors to the galleries. Each has his or her own story. Each is transformed by the interaction with Amber. Sometimes naive, sometimes brash, sometimes flirty, Amber is always amusing.
Threaded throughout the play we see how various gallery visitors interpret a particular painting, The Kiss, by a fictional French artist, in very different ways. At the end, Amber herself gains a new insight into the painting’s meaning and is able to reunite with her Australian family.
