Alex and Nick live together in a small country town where life revolves around football, school and fishing. Their peaceful existence is shattered when Nick and his friends are involved in a crime which devastates the community. Three mothers battle with how to deal with their sons and find that love is not nearly enough. Like the Murray cod and the white cockatoos, each woman must find how to live in a changing, often destructive world.
I Woz Ere is a funny and deeply moving play about how we love and live after our illusions about life come crashing down.

EXTRACT: You know you can hear him cheer when a bottle of piss is poured over her? It's Nick's voice saying, ‘Oliver mate!’ Want to know what I found disturbing about myself? When I first saw her in real life at court – the girl in the video – I felt no sympathy at all. All I felt was repulsion. All those fat rolls, the limp hair, those dull eyes, she’s not your ideal victim. We want them good looking don’t we, our victims. Ones we can show on posters and on tv, ones we go on marches for.

EXTRACT: Poor stupid girl to get herself caught up with those boys. When girls are young – they just, they just…they don’t know themselves. They’re reckless, they can be wild. Now she was reckless. I mean, what was she thinking? That they’d take her to the Year 12 formal? They’d all be best friends? Boys are different. It’s hard to know boys. My mother said when Oliver was born that sons are like diamonds. And they are you know. They’re so brilliant and beautiful and we love them differently, we do. We cherish them – at our own peril, and theirs.
