JAMILA MAIN

Jamila Main is a trained actor, self taught playwright, and emerging artistic leader based on Kaurna land in South Australia.

Since graduating from Adelaide College of the Arts' Acting course Jamila has worked across commercial, professional, and personal creative projects for stage and screen. Jamila recently appeared onstage in the lead role of her play Butterfly Kicks, directed by Roman Berry at TheatreWorks for Queer Quickies in the 2019 Midsumma Festival. Butterfly Kicks has also had a Creative Development with director/dramaturg Teddy Dunn at MakeSpace in Adelaide supported by Carclew. The opening monologue to Butterfly Kicks won the 2018 Feast Festival and Writers SA Queer Short Story Competition and was performed at the Voices of Women performance in NSW in 2019. Jamila has participated in a masterclass with Patricia Cornelius (Playwriting Australia and the Royal Exchange Theatre UK) and is a participant in the 2019 ATYP National Studio. Jamila's play Immaculate received a Senior Commendation (STCSA) in 2016 and a Merit Award (STCSA) for How to Eat Rabbit in 2019. Immaculate was presented as a reading at Back Porch Theatre in 2016. Jamila's monologue When I Was Eleven was a Top 5 Finalist in the 2016 HotHouse Theatre Solo Monologue Competition. Jamila's professional stage debut was in 2017 as a devisor and performer in Zero Feet Away for ActNow Theatre.
