Steven Hopley is a writer, director, producer and actor based in Sydney.
He was the winner of the Best New Writer award at Short+Sweet in 2004 for Spots, and Best Director in 2005 for his play Paradise, both of which were subsequently performed around Australia and the world. He wrote and directed the highly-acclaimed Fear, about the Howard Government's anti-terrorism laws, which played at the Crypt Theatre in 2006. His William Shakespeare's Reservoir Dogs played to packed houses at the Vanguard in 2014; and his Monopoly toured Sydney in 2017, followed by a four month run at the El Rocco in Kings Cross during 2019.
Since 2013, Steve has been writer-in-residence for Convict Footprints, researching and writing immersive historical performances for heritage locations, including Convict Footprints on the Old Great North Road, and Convict Footprints at Cockatoo Island, as well as Convict Footprints at the Farm and Through the Years at Bella Vista Farm, which have garnered several NSW Tourism Awards and National Trust Heritage Awards.
He ran the Central Coast Shakespeare Company between 2002 and 2006, and a late-night horror theatre based on the Grand Guignol in Newtown from 2009 to 2010. He is currently co-director of Enigma and Hot Room Theatre Group, and Artistic Director of the Sydney Shakespeare Company.
His other produced plays include Loneliness, The Committee, The Aussie Pride Barbecue, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Manor Comedy.
